Disability Terms and Definitions

 

 

Benefit Year
The 52 consecutive weeks for which you are eligible to receive unemployment benefits. The benefit year begins on the day that you file for unemployment benefits.

Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW)
Certification by a state as a licensed clinical social worker. Such licensure often requires at least two years experience with a direct client caseload under supervision.

Social Security and Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI)
Monthly cash benefit administered by the federal Social Security Administration (SSA) to retired or disabled workers and their qualified dependents. Beneficiaries must be 62 years of age or older, or disabled, and have enough work "credits" to be qualified.

Plan for Achieving Self-Support (PASS)
Under an approved PASS, recipients of federal SSI may set aside income and/or resources over a period of time to reach a goal to become financially self supporting. The income and resources set aside may later be used to obtain occupational training or education, purchase occupational equipment, establish a business, etc.

Supplemental Security Income (SSI):
A cash benefit authorized by Title 16 of the federal Social Security Act. Eligibility and benefits are administered by the federal Social Security Administration at field offices throughout each state.

Impairment-Related Work Expenses (IRWE)
The provision that permits the exclusion from earnings of the costs of items and services which are needed in order for a disabled individual to work, which are paid for by the individual, and which are necessarily incurred by that individual because of a physical or mental impairment.

Vocational Rehabilitation Services
Those services identified in Rehabilitation Act of 1973, as amended, which are provided in an individualized plan for employment necessary to assist an individual with a disability in preparing for, securing, retaining, or regaining an employment outcome that is consistent with the strengths, resources, priorities, concerns, abilities, capabilities, interests, and informed choice of the individual.

Augmentative or alternative communication (AAC) device
An electronic device that talks for a person who cannot speak. The device usually has a recorded or electronic voice and can say words or sentences the user chooses.

Conversion Privilege
If included, this option allows employees who are terminating employment to continue some or all of their LTD coverage at their own expense without submitting evidence of insurability.

Auxiliary Aids and Services
Devices or services that accommodate a functional limitation of a person with a communication disability.
